A tourist shopping area on the south side of Hong Kong island. Locals generally do not shop here. These merchants are generally _not_ members of the Hong Kong Tourist Association. Merchants with the HKTA logo are generally of higher reliability in terms of correctly representing the materials from which an item is made. Nonetheless...it's an interesting experience for tourists; barter hard...and don't buy anything expensive.
An interesting piece we saw at Stanley Market.
These apartments are built in an especially auspicious location...between the mountains and the sea. The hole is provided in the building so that the dragon of the mountains will not be blocked from to drinking from the sea. These apartments go for about US$3,000 per square foot (not Hong Kong dollars - U.S. dollars).
(We took these pictures for Anthony)
This bridge connects Tsing Yi Island to Ma Wan Island -
part of the transportation network to serve the new Chek Lap Kok airport.
This bridge connects Ma Wan Island with Lantau Island
(where Chek Lap Kok Airport and Po Lin Monastery are located)
This was taken during Typhoon Signal #3 warning of
the approach of Typhoon York, from the road to Lantau Island
Note the authentic British spelling of "harbor" ;-)
Typhoon signal number 8 was posted at about 2 a.m., which as you can see from the photos above, means a shutdown in public transportation. Nevertheless, our tour company got us up at 5 a.m., stuck us on a privately chartered bus and took us to the airport - because Northwest Airlines, alone among every other airline that day, had not indicated that their flights would be delayed.
No place to go. Our tour group went back to the terminal to wait out the storm
We were told that the eye of Typhoon York passed right over the airport;
this would explain the calm period during the middle of our tour group's wait!
