Wild Goose Pagoda

This is Wild Goose Pagoda, located in a Buddhist monastary. The upturned eaves at the roof corners, made of stone, have fallen off during earthquakes over the years, but the building remains standing.

The story of how the building got it's name goes something like this...the monks at the monastary were meat-eating Buddhists. One day when they were very hungry, a flock of wild geese flew over. A monk looked up and wished that he could eat one of the geese. One fell to earth, dead. The monks decided that it wouldn't be right to eat the goose, decided to become the vegetarian type of Buddhists, and the name derived from that incident.
